I watched a video of that with my son after visiting the Smithsonian (It’s on youtube, very entertaining).
I knew it was dropped by a bomber, I didn’t realize that Chuck wasn’t already in the cockpit when it took off. There was a small half elevator that dropped down from the bay to allow him to climb into the X1. He was literally out in the breeze below the belly of a bomber before climbing into the orange rocket powered experimental plane.

Wow, I never realized that he was essentially sitting on the floor in the X-1.
